Kilimanjaro: A Trekking Journey with Ray Baker

Mount Kilimanjaro, the crown of Africa, has captivated adventurers for generations. Its snow-capped summit rises 5,895 metres above the plains of Tanzania, offering a truly unique trekking experience. For Ray Baker, a seasoned trek leader with Back Track Adventures, Kilimanjaro is more than a destination—it has been a defining chapter of his career. As Ray prepares for his final trek to the summit this June, we reflect on what makes this climb special, sharing his insights and experiences to inspire those considering their own journey.

The Allure of Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro holds a timeless appeal as one of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each continent. It offers a rare opportunity to climb a world-class mountain without technical mountaineering skills, making it accessible to both seasoned hikers and novices. Yet, despite its accessibility, Kilimanjaro is no walk in the park.

“Summit morning is the hardest part. At 5,500 metres, the air is thin, temperatures plummet, and the final ascent feels endless.” But reaching the top, he says, is worth every step: “Standing on the summit is a moment of pure euphoria, shared with clients and guides. It’s an experience that stays with you forever.”

A Trek Designed for Success

While Kilimanjaro is achievable for many, proper planning and acclimatisation are essential for a successful summit. Ray highlights this critical aspect: “Acclimatisation is everything. Many itineraries are too short, leading to a 60% summit success rate. Our nine-day trek is designed to give clients the best chance of success, including a key acclimatisation day with a side trek to higher altitudes.”

Back Track Adventures’ itinerary balances challenging days with periods of rest, ensuring trekkers can adapt to the altitude. This approach not only improves the likelihood of reaching the summit but also makes the journey safer and more enjoyable.

The Role of the Guides and Team

A significant part of Kilimanjaro’s magic lies in the expertise and camaraderie of the local guides and crew. “The professionalism of the local team is incredible,” Ray shares. “They work tirelessly to support trekkers and ensure their safety and comfort. Without their dedication, these climbs wouldn’t be possible.”

Trekkers are accompanied by a team that handles everything from setting up camp to preparing meals. Speaking of meals, “The food on the trek is fantastic. From hearty breakfasts with porridge and eggs to hot lunches and dinners, you’re always well-fed. Snacks like trail mix and chocolate are great for keeping energy levels up.”

The Challenges and Rewards of Kilimanjaro

Climbing Kilimanjaro is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Ray constantly emphasises the importance of preparation: “Being mentally ready comes from physical fitness, having the right gear, and choosing an itinerary that allows proper acclimatisation. Speaking to experienced trekkers beforehand also helps build confidence.”

Despite its challenges, Kilimanjaro is a mountain for everyone. Ray reassures first-time trekkers, “You won’t feel out of place if you’re new to trekking. Many climbers have little experience, and our guides are always there to assist and advise.”

Ray’s Most Memorable Trek

Over 13 Kilimanjaro treks, Ray has experienced his fair share of adventure. One standout memory is a climb following 30 days of continuous snow. “Conditions were icy, and we had to wear crampons. During the summit attempt, one of my crampons broke, and I slid 150 metres down an icy slope in the dark,” he recalls. “Luckily, I came to a stop and continued climbing. By daylight, I reached the summit alone, only to realise I had passed the group during the night. It was a 22.5-hour day, but an unforgettable one.”

Why Kilimanjaro is More Than a Trek

The appeal of Kilimanjaro goes beyond the climb itself. Many travellers extend their trip with a safari in Tanzania’s iconic Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater. These add-ons allow visitors to immerse themselves in Africa’s extraordinary landscapes and wildlife, creating a comprehensive and unforgettable experience.

For Ray, Kilimanjaro has been a deeply rewarding journey. “What I’ll miss most is the physical challenge of summit day and the joy of sharing the experience with clients and the local crew. Their dedication and hard work make every trek special,” he reflects.
