Enthusiastic 4wd drivers will love the driving environment. However, no previous 4wd experience is necessary, just be a safe and competent driver. This is not a 4wd challenge holiday.
To protect the environment, Botswana authorities regulate visitor numbers in some campsites. Therefore, our group sizes are small. Please book early.

Accompanied by your Guides, transfer to the Avis Depot. Complete hire vehicle paperwork and receive a comprehensive vehicle run down. Proceed in radio linked convoy. Visit a supermarket to stock your vehicle with personal supplies. Your route today involves highway driving, familiarising yourself with your hire vehicle. Enjoy engaging insights of Southern African city, rural and small-town lifestyles. Your first camp is set in beautiful bushland. Matamba Bush Camp is a sanctuary for Sable antelopes, springbok, wildebeest, and a wide variety of birdlife. (BD)
Cross border into Botswana. Journey on sealed roads through small Botswana towns and scenic countryside. Camp tonight at Khama Rhino Sanctuary. offering a rare opportunity to view the endangered white and black rhino. (D)
For your next 3 days, depart the sealed roads and travel 4wd tracks into an awe inspiring 16,000 square kilometre salt pan and ever-changing savannah environments. A major attraction is Kubu Island, a remote granite outcrop studded with Baobab trees. Explore Nxai National Park. The wildlife you will be seeking over these 3 days include. elephant, zebra, blue wildebeest, kudu, hartebeest, gemsbok, springbok, hyena, jackal, giraffe, lion, cheetah and much more. Arriving in the safari town of Maun, the southern gateway to the world-famous Okavango Eco System, refuel and restock provisions for your next adventure. Over the following 6days, you navigate a maze of 4wd tracks traversing the world-famous Okavango Eco System. Explore the legendary safari areas of Moremi, Khwai and Chobe. You break your camping experience for 2 nights to stay in a very comfortable community operated Safari lodge. All meals and activities, including drives with experienced trackers, are supplied by the lodge team. (B x 2, L x 2, D x 6)
Famous for its large elephant herds, the Okavango will not disappoint for the quantity and quality of animals and birds you are likely to see on your stay within the various regions of this vast area. Large herds of cape buffalo are common, as are Burchell’s zebra and family groups of giraffes, baboons, warthog, vervet monkeys, jackal, lions, honey badgers, banded mongoose, and hopefully cheetah on the open flood plains and leopard are often spotted especially by those fortunate to be camping within the park such as our Team. The list is endless, wild dog, hyena, hippos, 19 species of antelope, from the 700kg Eland to 7kg Sharpe’s grysbok, your days and nights are sure to provide wildlife encounters that will enthral. The bird life is also spectacular with the ever present lilac breasted roller adding constant splashes of colour to just about every scene and with such varied habitats from grasslands to forest and scrub areas there are over 400 recorded species spotted. Watching the majestic fish eagle swooping down into a waterhole or river to collect a fish is a never to be forgotten moment on any safari.
Departing the Okavango Delta, your next stop is the safari town of Kasane. Options available include: - morning drive along Chobe River and afternoon Chobe River cruise.
Leaving your vehicles safely stored in Kasane, you cross the border by private minibus into Zimbabwe and the adjacent city of Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is Back Track’s favourite location in all Southern Africa. Here you stay in a very comfortable, centrally located hotel adjacent to the Falls and enjoy the many other local attractions. Take full advantage of the wonderful restaurants available. (B x1)
Transfer back to your Kasane campsite. Time to refuel and restock provisions. Your journey now is on sealed highway enjoying the Botswana countryside to Johannesburg to complete your holiday adventure. Enroute, you stay at 2 unique campsites. Elephant Sands offers close elephant experiences and Goo Moremi offers short bushwalks. (B x 1, D x 1)
Arrive in Johannesburg and enjoy lunch at your Safari Hosts home. Return Avis hire vehicles. Transfer to City Lodge, Airport Hotel. (L)

Meals provided as part of the safari cost are marked on the itinerary each day as follows: – B breakfast, L lunch, D dinner.
Your Safari vehicle has a fully equipped kitchen providing: -fridge freezer, gas cooker, all cooking and kitchen items to prepare a meal, plus, cutlery, plates, bowls coffee cups and even wine goblets.
On camping days, breakfast and lunch can be prepared individually by safari members. These supplies can be readily purchased while on safari.
On some days, meals are available to purchase, or, are provided by our campsite providers.
Dinner (D)
On camping nights where camp restaurants are not available, dinners are provided and prepared by your Safari Guides. Special dietary requirements should be discussed when booking. To whet your appetite, this is our typical camping dinner menu
Breakfast (B)
Suggestions include, coffee, tea, rusks, cereal, bacon, eggs, fruit.
Lunch (L)
Suggestions include, wraps, salads, fruit. Leftovers from previous night’s dinner can be utilised by the group at lunch.
Morning/Afternoon tea
Depending on the progress of your daily itinerary, breaks for morning and afternoon tea are scheduled.
Sundowners
An important part of any safari is the sunset ritual known as Sundowners. Traditionally a time to enjoy a gin and tonic or an aperitif of choice while embracing the peace and serenity of the African bush in the fading African light.
