Welcome to the captivating South of Italy! Upon arrival at Bari airport, the group will be transferred to our charming hotel in Matera, located approximately an hour away. This beautiful hotel will serve as our home for the first four nights, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the flavours, sights, and sounds of the Basilicata region. At around 7 pm, we will gather for our first "aperitivo,". Following the aperitivo, we will take a short walk to a local Osteria for our first taste of classic southern Italian dishes, nestled within a charming cave, providing a unique and enchanting setting for your culinary experience. Our Basilicata adventure begins with a visit to Craco, a well-known ghost town renowned for its use as a backdrop in various films. Accompanied by our local guide, we will unravel the intriguing story behind this abandoned town. Craco's demise occurred towards the end of the 20th century when faulty pipework led to a catastrophic landslide, forcing its residents to relocate to a nearby town. Our Basilicata adventure begins with a visit to Craco, a well-known ghost town renowned for its use as a backdrop in various films. Accompanied by our local guide, we will unravel the intriguing story behind this abandoned town. Upon our return to Matera, there's still time for a captivating walking tour of this enchanting city, hewn into the rock. Embark on a captivating journey to Castelmezzano, nestled amidst the breathtaking Lucanian Dolomites. Explore the enchanting destination and discover the Santa Maria Mother Church with its remarkable 14th-century wooden statue and Baroque-style altar. Stroll through the village, admiring splendid palaces built by noble families and the ruins of Castello Saraceno, a Norman-Swabian castle. After a delightful Lucanian lunch, we make our way to the Pessolani dairy farm in Abriola, a Slow Food presidium for producing Caciocavallo Podolico cheese from free-roaming Podolica bovine breed's milk. The cheese's distinctiveness comes from the breed and quality pastures. On the way back to Matera, stop in Pietragalla, famous for "i Palmenti," grass-covered stone structures that were once active wine production laboratories. Our day begins Matera, with a cooking class by Anna Maria, a representative of the Cesarine Community. Cesarine is the oldest network of home cooks in Italy, and since 2019 part of the Slow Food ecosystem. Get ready for hands-on culinary experiences as we prepare authentic regional dishes. Following the cooking class, we'll enjoy the fruits of our labour during a delightful lunch. We continue our day with a visit to the esteemed Don Francesco salami factory, known for the Pezzente della Montagna Materana salami. Explore the traditional production methods before meandering through the charming town of Stigliano before heading back to Matera for our last dinner in the cave town. BLD
A short scenic drive will take us to Altamura, a town renowned throughout Italy for its exceptional bread. Passing through the ancient city gates, we'll wander the medieval streets dating back to the Roman Empire era. Our journey will lead us to the St. Blaise and St. Nicholas churches, while the aromas wafting through the Old Town will guide us to a local bakery, where we'll savour the famous country-style sourdough bread and a delightful lunch before heading south towards the picturesque Puglian peninsula. Our next destination is Le Capase Resort, nestled along the breathtaking coast between Otranto and Santa Cesarea Terme, Italy's most easterly point. In the late morning, we'll continue our adventure with a picturesque coastal drive to Otranto, soaking in the stunning vistas along the way. Once in Otranto, we'll indulge in an exquisite lunch, followed by a fascinating exploration of the historic Adriatic port town, including its castle, cathedral, and St. Peter's church adorned with Byzantine frescoes. Returning to our hotel, take some time to refresh and relax before we head to a nearby winery. There, we'll engage in a delightful tasting experience, savouring the flavours of local wines. Then, we reach the pearl of the Ionian Sea, Gallipoli, crossing a bridge to its heart protected by a majestic castle. Stroll through winding streets, admire distinctive architecture, and visit impressive sixteenth-century churches like Purità, St. Francesco of Assisi, and the Rosario during a guided walking tour. Indulge in a delectable fish lunch overlooking the Ionian Sea. On our way back, experience the authentic ambiance of Masseria Le Stanzie, one of the region's oldest rural buildings, and savour genuine Salento gastronomy in an intimate and familiar environment. Today, we embark on a fascinating journey to Ostuni, the renowned white village of Puglia. Roaming through the enchanting streets of Ostuni's old town, marvel at the captivating architectural wonders that grace the city. In Ostuni, we will have the pleasure of meeting Angela, our Cesarina for Ostuni. Angela will lead us on a journey through small producers and specialised shops, where we will collect the fresh ingredients needed for our upcoming cooking class. After gathering all the groceries, we'll indulge in an Italian Aperitivo before embarking on a hands-on cooking class, where we'll learn to prepare three regional Italian recipes. Once we've created our culinary masterpieces, we'll sit down to enjoy our delicious creations paired with local wines. After a satisfying lunch, we'll continue our exploration by visiting the charming, white-walled village of Locorotondo. Wander through the maze of whitewashed lanes, and soak in the grandeur of the baroque archways. Finally, we'll head to Alberobello where our accommodation will be a bit different as we all be assigned a Trullo house in the village for the next 2 nights. BLD

On our return journey to Trani, we'll make a stop in the town of Andria, where we'll visit the quirky Sugar Plum Museum set up by the Mucci family in 1894 and is one of Italy's oldest confectionery houses. We start in Lesina, visiting the Fortore Dairy Farm for a delightful cheese tasting of fresh scamorza, ricotta, and mozzarella. Once a small fishing village, it has now transformed into a popular resort town known for its beautiful beaches. Along the coast, we'll come across unique structures called "Trabucchi"—platforms made of pine logs anchored to the rocky shoreline. At "il trabucco di Mimi," a converted Trabucco bistro, we'll enjoy a luscious lunch of fresh fish while soaking in the coastal views. Today, we venture to Bari, the bustling capital of Puglia, for an exciting day of exploration. Our journey begins with a guided walking tour through the enchanting lanes of the Old Town, where we'll discover iconic landmarks such as the Basilica of St. Nicholas, immersing ourselves in the city's history and rich cultural heritage. We'll continue our exploration by visiting the city's French enclave, strolling along the modern seafront sights. One of the most memorable moments of our day awaits as we step into the enchanting Street of the "Little Ears" (Strada delle Orecchiette). Here, we'll be immersed in the secrets of crafting orecchiette, a cherished traditional Puglian pasta. Here talented women, sitting behind wooden tables on the cobbled street, skilfully crafting pasta outside their homes. Between a smile and a chat, they occasionally pause to sell some of their delicious pasta, spreading the love for their culinary artistry to locals and visitors alike. Following our time in Bari, you'll have some free time in the afternoon to further explore and appreciate the city at your own pace. In the evening, back in Trani, we'll gather for our final dinner in Puglia, at a Michelin rated restaurant. BLD
Today, we bid farewell to Puglia and venture into Molise, a charming and lesser-explored region of Italy. Our first stop is Tremoli, a picturesque fishing town adorned with fortified walls in the old town. Here, we'll immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of this historical gem, appreciating its unique beauty. Afterward, we'll enjoy a traditional Molisean lunch in a local osteria, while trying to spot the differences with the neighbouring region dishes. With our appetites satisfied, we'll make our way to Campobasso, the capital of Molise and our base for the next three nights. Upon arrival and check-in, we'll take a leisurely stroll to explore both city centre of Campobasso. The historic centre, characterized by its medieval layout, gracefully curves on the slope of Sant'Antonio Hill, crowned by the impressive Monforte Castle. The Murattian centre, built in the early 19th century under the direction of Gioacchino Murat (Napoleon brother-in-law), offers an innovative urban expansion with parks, squares, and tree-lined avenues. A highlight awaits us at the castle's hilltop, where we'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the city below from an altitude of almost 800 meters. BLD
Our day begins with a visit to the remarkable Roman ruins of Saepinum, well-preserved at an altitude of 702 meters. Originally a shepherd's reception centre established by the Samnites, the Romans expanded it into a thriving city along transhumance paths. Saepinum remains an inhabited archaeological site, with the village of Altilia flourishing among the ancient ruins. As we explore, we'll admire its urban model based on cattle paths. Next, we head to the remote town of Conca Casale, known for the traditional pork sausage "Signora di Conca Casale." Crafted by elderly ladies, this sausage has historical significance as it was produced for the aristocracy. Enjoy a traditional lunch with unique regional specialties at a local trattoria. We then journey to Mount Miletto, the area's highest peak at 2050 meters, with a brief stop at the Basilica Minore dell'Addolorata di Castelpetroso, a sanctuary with a fascinating history. Continuing to Capitello Matese, we'll ride the chairlift to Rifugio Colle del Caprio, offering awe-inspiring hilltop views. Today, we embark on an unforgettable truffle hunting adventure in the pristine woods of Molise. Next, we visit Agnone to explore the Campane Marinelli foundry, where bells have been crafted since the year 1000. This prestigious foundry holds the privilege of using the Papal Arm Coast in their production, bestowed by Pope Pio XI in 1924. We'll learn about the fascinating artistry and traditions of bell-making passed down through generations. Continuing our journey, we visit Pietrabbondante, an ancient Samnite site with significant religious importance. Dating back to the fourth century BC, this captivating archaeological site features two temples and a theatre. Ongoing excavations continue to reveal remarkable glimpses of the past.
